What Mask Are You Wearing?

Friday, October 31, 2008

Today is October 31st, and across our nation, children are eagerly anticipating tonight’s activity. Although Christians have differing views on Halloween, the reality is that today is a time when children – and even many adults – are given opportunity to look like someone else. Talk to six-year-olds in September about what they are going to be for Halloween and they will have known for months: this year a princess, next year a doctor or perhaps a pumpkin, rock star, fireman or a police officer. The costumes and masks we wear allow us to be someone or something else, even if it is just for a night.

The problem is, when many of us grow up we don’t stop wearing our masks. Perhaps you have had times in your life where just before you walk out the door, you put on your mask of contentment. What were you hiding? Loss, pain, burden, pride, selfishness, fear, perfectionism? Sometimes these masks help get us through the day; however, the more you wear the mask the harder it is to take off. The more you continue to bury your emotions and fears and hide behind what you think the world wants to see, the more you risk losing yourself.

In Luke 13:10-13, we read of Jesus healing a crippled woman. This woman had been bent over for eighteen years. When Jesus sees her, He says, “You are set free from your infirmity.” Set free. What wonderful words from our Savior. He puts His healing hand on her and the Bible says she immediately stood straight. Don’t you want to stand straight and come out from behind the mask you have been wearing?

Jesus came so that we all could be set free. He wants to free us from the bondage of sin, fear, pride, the world. Can you hear Him whispering in your ear, “Be free”? He wants to heal you just like He healed the crippled woman. He wants you to be set free from anything that cripples you and keeps you from having a relationship with Him. He wants to free you from anything that drains your hope and joy. He wants to free you from whatever entraps you. He wants you to know He sees through the mask and He loves you just as you are. Ultimately, He wants to help you peel off the mask you hide behind.

America's Choice 2008

Thursday, October 30, 2008

The video is designed especially for undecided Christian voters and is safe for all ages (there are no graphic images). The goal here is to give American citizens a solid grasp of where Senators McCain and Obama really stand on the life issue, using their own words. Millions of young lives depend on our election-day decisions. Over 35 years of hard won pro-life battles could be reversed if voters remain uninformed, especially Christian voters who alone could reclaim the rights of the unborn on November 4th.

The Quilt

Wednesday, October 29, 2008

As I faced my Maker at the last judgment, I knelt before the Lord along with all the other souls. Before each of us laid our lives like the squares of a quilt in many piles. An angel sat before each of us, sewing our quilt squares together into a tapestry that is our life

As my angel took each piece of cloth off the pile, I noticed how ragged and empty each of my squares were. They were filled with giant holes. Each square was labeled with a part of my life that had been difficult – the challenges and temptations I was faced with in everyday life. I saw hardships that I endured, which were the largest holes of all.

I glanced around me. Nobody else had such squares. Other than a tiny hole here and there, the other tapestries were filled with rich color and the bright hues of worldly fortune.

I gazed upon my own life and was disheartened. My angel was sewing the ragged pieces of cloth together, threadbare and empty, like binding air.

Finally, the time came when each life was to be displayed – held up to the light and the scrutiny of truth. The others rose; each in turn, holding up their tapestries. So filled their lives had been.

My angel looked at me and nodded for me to rise. My gaze dropped to the ground in shame. I hadn’t had all the earthly fortunes. I had love in my life, and laughter, but there had also been trials of illness and wealth and false accusations that took from me my world as I knew it.

I had to start over many times. I often struggled with the temptation to quit, only to somehow muster the strength to pick up and begin again. I spent many nights on my knees in prayer, asking for help and guidance in my life. I had often been held up to ridicule, which I endured painfully, each time offering it up to the Father in hopes that I would not melt within my skin beneath the judgmental gaze of those who unfairly judged me.

Now, I had to face the truth. My life was what it was, and I had to accept it for what it was. I rose and slowly lifted the combined squares of my life to the light.

An awe-filled gasp filled the air. I gazed around at the others who stared at me with wide eyes. Then, I looked upon the tapestry before me. Light flooded the many holes, creating an image – the face of Christ. Then our Lord stood before me, with warmth and love in His eyes. He said, “Every time you gave over your life to Me, it became My life, My hardships, and My struggles. Each point of light in your life is when you stepped aside and let Me shine through, until there was more of Me than there was of you.”

May all our quilts be threadbare and worn, allowing Christ to shine through!

Apply the Word CONSTANTLY

Apply the Word Constantly - Kim Potter

I spent the afternoon with a friend today - watching a new movie. Now, friends, I have not been to a movie theatre in 10-15 years. However, I had so many readers recommend this movie to me that I had to go and see it. The movie was called 'Fireproof' and I would highly recommend it to everyone. Amy and I cried most of the way through but it was a deeply moving movie. I left feeling a renewed sense of God - it was great.

As we drove back, we talked about the Lord and what He had been doing in our personal lives. I have learned, when I am going through purging times in the Lord, many times others are too. I think it is something He is doing all over the world through His people.

I remember back 19 years ago, the first time I began to go through a purging, I wondered if I had even gotten saved. It seemed like all the things I had repented of with my attitude were suddenly magnified. Do you know what I mean? As Amy and I talked we realized we were both again going through a purging time, as is my daughter.

Now, if someone is going through a purging time they are not fun to be around - not at all. But if you realize that God is working in them, you will be able to have mercy, knowing He is working all things for their good. Another great thing about purging is when you make it to the other side; you have reached a whole new place in God.

I have been through this process a number of times, but this time is different. My faith is different now. God had said to me last year that He was taking me to a place where my faith is unshakable. I can tell, even in this purging process, that my faith is different. It is stronger, more stable and I have much more wisdom than I had at other times of purging.

I am fully persuaded that one thing determines the length of time we go through tests or trials. That one thing is what comes out of your mouth during that time. I am persuaded that if you say nothing but the word of God your season will be short. Remember the children of Israel and their eleven day journey that ended up taking forty years - for one reason, they complained and spoke against God.

Now, you may think you would never speak against God, however if you say the opposite of what God has said about a person, situation or promise, you are speaking against God. We don't want to see it that way, but it is true.

As I have said often, it still amazes me that we struggle with our words when we know by teaching how important our words are. They literally guide our life. They lead us in a specific direction.

Just as it was with the children of Israel, I think we determine the amount of time it takes to get to our Promised Land. And that depends on what comes out of our mouth. I always go back to what Jesus said 'I only say what I hear the Father say.' I know that sounds impossible, but Jesus did it. And He did it as a man on this earth, empowered by the Holy Spirit.

We, today, have the same empowerment as Jesus has. We have the same ability to say only what we hear the Father say. But we are so trained from birth to say what we see instead of speaking by faith. It takes time to retrain yourself to speak only what the Father says - and personally, it never ceases to amaze me how often I speak against what His word says in my every day speech.

I have made it my purpose for the next forty days to say only what I hear the Father say. Now, I will mess up and I will have to repent many times I am sure, but I have purposed in my heart to train myself to say only what my Father says.

I am so encouraged and excited to press toward that mark - the Bible says when we get control of our tongue, we are perfect and mature in God - that is what I am shooting for. Mature in Christ and becoming more and more Christ-like - walking as my Jesus walked.

How about you? Have you been going through the battle longer than you imagined it would be? If so, what are you saying? I don't mean when you are praying, I mean the other times when those situations are staring you in the face, what are you saying during those times? Are you continuing to speak the word of God and only say what He says? It's vital what you say - and it will determine how long you are in the battle.

The Promised Land is already yours - it has been all the time. The promise God made you is already yours, He has been leading you toward it the whole time - He has a quick route if you are willing to only do what He says do and only say what He says say. Does it ever astound you what all Jesus accomplished in three short years? Do you realize in three short years this one man changed the entire world, for years to come? If we were to do what He did - imagine what we could do in a few short years. Imagine what we could do if 1,000 of us did exactly what Jesus did - we could turn this world around.

We have the anointing - we have all the authority - we have the ability through Christ to change things. Yet to do that - we are going to have to walk like Jesus walked. Talk like Jesus talked - all the time. And trust like Jesus trusted. If you can trust God when you are being beaten by the world and hanging on a cross someone else has put you on - I can promise you that you will rise again. If you can worship Him and trust Him when you have no idea what is going on - I promise you will walk in resurrection power. If you can speak the Word and the Word only - I can assure you the Word of God will manifest in your life - all the time. It's up to you. It's all up to you.

Faith + Hope = Victory!

Faith plus Hope Equals Victory
- but you gotta believe you can fly!

~ By Carenda Lynch
Carenda is the President and Editor-in-Chief of a new Christian Women's Magazine entitled, Far Above Rubies.

To walk in victory, to me, is literally rooted on the foundation of faith and the substance of hope. If one finds themselves feeling hopeless it is impossible to activate faith and reap the unseen evidence of it. If we are going to walk in victory we must take action.

The word tells us that faith without works is dead. Many of us must understand and appreciate that victory comes from pursuing purpose. I believe that a seed, called vision, is planted in us but when the enemy attempts to attack and deceive us he rather us be a victim than a victor.

One of the major battles I had to overcome was the approval of others. I did not have victory in this area at one point in my life. I cared more about what people said than what God said. That is a very uncomfortable and unstable compromising position to be in.

However, I have learned that only what we do for Christ will last. And when people say or assume that your dream and your vision is impossible ,that is the perfect time to allow the vision in you to leap as a reminder that the promises of God are yes and Amen!

If you are going to walk in victory you must learn to endure. The Bible tells us that the race is not given to the swift nor the strong but to the one who endures to the end. One of the things that makes me go on is understanding that I am God's workmanship (Ephesians 2:10), accepting that I belong to Him and that I have been created in His image.

Therefore, if I quit to soon I quit on God and I abort the plan from the Masters Hands; and for me that is not an option.

I'm going to spread my wings - with God all things are possible!

When I Say "I Am a Christian"...

Tuesday, October 14, 2008

“I Am a Christian”
- by Maya Angelou

When I say… “I am a Christian” I’m not shouting “I’m clean livin.”
I’m whispering “I was lost, now I’m found and forgiven.”

When I say… “I am a Christian” I don’t speak of this with pride.
I’m confessing that I stumble and need Christ to be my guide.

When I say… “I am a Christian” I’m not trying to be strong.
I’m professing that I’m weak and need His strength to carry on.

When I say… “I am a Christian” I’m not bragging of success.
I’m admitting I have failed and need God to clean my mess.

When I say… “I am a Christian” I’m not claiming to be perfect,
My flaws are far too visible, but God believes I am worth it.

When I say… “I am a Christian” I still feel the sting of pain.
I have my share of heartaches, so I call upon His name.

When I say… “I am a Christian” I’m not holier than thou.
I’m just a simple sinner who received God’s good grace, somehow.

"Jesus Christ for President"

Monday, October 13, 2008

Sojourn Pastor Daniel Montgomery is currently preaching a two-part series entitled “Christ for President,” using Romans 13 as his text.

I encourage you to watch this teaching video; it contains the entirety of Pastor Daniel’s first sermon in the series, Christ For President.

Here's an excerpt from the blog post: "With the presidential campaign in sprint to the polls, and candidates on both sides of the political spectrum promising to save the country from certain doom in the hands of the opposite party, we, the church, must ask: can politics save the world? Christians are called to no longer conform to the pattern of this world (Romans 12:2a), and the pattern of politics in our day and age is to place our hope for the future in the plan of one party or another. Healthcare reform, vigilant national security, wall-street buy-outs, tax cuts for the poor, for the rich; we’re told these things will save us. But the world is shattered by sin and this corrupts everything. The hope of political action is ultimately false. Above politicians, above government, Christ is our King, our Savior and Redeemer. Jesus Christ is the only hope of the world. God’s plan for the redemption of our sin-shattered world was not an earthly kingdom but a kingdom in the soul. So here we are, living in society with laws and government where Christ is not president. What do we do?"

Watch the video.

Looking forward to part two. :)

Will You Miss Him?

Friday, October 10, 2008

They were looking for a Lion, He came as a Lamb,
and they missed him.

They were looking for a Warrior, He came as a Peace maker,
and they missed him.

They were looking for a King, He came as a Servant,
and they missed him.

They were looking for Liberation from Rome,
He submitted to the Roman cross, and they missed him.

They were looking for a fit to their mold,
He was the mold maker, and they missed him.

What are you looking for?
Lion? Warrior? King? Liberator?

What are you looking for?
They were looking for their temporal needs to be met.

He came to meet their eternal needs,
and they missed him.

He came as a Lamb to be sacrificed for your sin.
Will you miss him?

He came to make peace between God and man.
Will you miss him?

He came to model servanthood for all mankind.
Will you miss him?

He came that we might have true Liberty.
Will you miss him?

He came to give you eternal life.
Will you miss him?

When we submit to the Lamb, we will meet the Lion.
Join with the Peacemaker and we will meet the Warrior.

Work with the Servant and we will meet the King.

Walk with the Submitted and we will meet the Liberator.

Concern ourselves with the eternal and we will have the temporal.
If Jesus is not fitting into the mold you have, then come to the mold maker and get His new one.

Submit to His plan for your life and you will see the eternal need met first,
then all the other things you have need of will be taken care of as well.

Taste & See That the Lord is Good!

Tuesday, October 07, 2008

There was a blind girl who hated herself because she was blind. She hated everyone, except her loving boyfriend. He was always there for her. She told her boyfriend, 'If I could only see the world, I will marry you.'

One day, someone donated a pair of eyes to her. When the bandages came off, she was able to see everything, including her boyfriend.

He asked her, 'Now that you can see the world, will you marry me?'

The girl looked at her boyfriend and saw that he was blind. The sight of his closed eyelids shocked her. She hadn't expected that. The thought of looking at them the rest of her life led her to refuse to marry him.

Her boyfriend left in tears and days later wrote a note to her saying: 'Take good care of your eyes, my dear; for before they were yours, they were mine.'

This is how the human brain often works when our status changes. Only a very few remember what life was like before, and who was always by their side in the most painful situations.

Life Is a Gift

Today before you say an unkind word
Think of someone who can't speak.

Before you complain about the taste of your food -
Think of someone who has nothing to eat.

Before you complain about your husband or wife -
Think of someone who's crying out to GOD for a companion.

Today before you complain about life
Think of someone who went too early to heaven.

Before you complain about your children
Think of someone who desires children but they're barren..

Before you argue about your dirty house someone didn't clean or sweep
Think of the people who are living in the streets.

Before whining about the distance you drive
Think of someone who walks the same distance with their feet.

And when you are tired and complain about your job
Think of the unemployed, the disabled, and those who wish they had your job.

But before you think of pointing the finger or condemning another
Remember that not one of us is without sin.

And when depressing thoughts seem to get you down -
Put a smile on your face and think: you're alive and still around.
